Currently renovating our large residential home in the North End of Detroit. We are part of a larger, diverse community/neighborhood in the wonderful and outstanding city of Detroit. Visitors and volunteers are incredibly welcome to participate in the evolution from vacant-forlorn house to urban permaculture action-hotbed. Please visit www.winwinreactor.wordpress.com for more information.
Win/Win Reactor is our response to the storied, troubled, and fantastically bizarre city of Detroit. The math is clear and striking: with an estimated 70,000 vacant properties and a dramatically reduced population (1.8 million in 1950 -- 700 thousand in 2012), Detroit is a real dilemma; how does the city provide services (street lighting, trash pickup, road maintenance, etc.) to the citizens in such a shrunken city? And yet, nothing has been said of the history of Detroit: the birthplace of the automobile, of the assembly line, even of soda pop. Detroit is home to the United State's first aquarium, its first mile of paved concrete, its first air-conditioned department store, its first state fair... and many of the country's finest art deco buildings (not to mention the music). Detroit was the very heartbeat of the USA, its capital of innovation. Here's another record set by Detroit: the United State's largest city to file for bankruptcy. If you are new to the story of Detroit, get used to asking questions. 'How did this happen' is a common one. We can talk about that.
We (Gregory Crawford & Maina Petry) find a most poetic, compelling, and powerful reality in the city of Detroit. Our project Win/Win Reactor is intended to shine a light on the benefits and opportunities of permaculture, as it relates to the post-industrial, post-american-dream city of Detroit.
We purchased the property, a 3,700sq ft two-family flat, on a 6,400sq ft lot, in the 2103 annual foreclosure auction. Our first task is to clean! With extreme care, we are selecting every single item that can be reused from the piles-upon-piles-upon-piles of stuff throughout our house. You wouldn't believe what we have found! And it is with this care that we are piecing together the story and history of our house the previous owners. We are hoping that by June of 2014 we will be able to move in, and with luck, we will have water and electrics up and running by summer's end. But all of these details are extra blurry now, so if you are interested in visiting and/or helping out, please visit our website, www.winwinreactor.wordpress, and send us a message.
Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
