A Transition Town demonstration & experimentation permaculture garden
This is a project by Transition Town Vallei permaculture group, begun in 2011 on a traditional allotment plot. The project was designed and is managed by Landscape Architect and permaculture consultant Fiona Morris. The site is laid out as a series of small gardens on a loose zoning principle using different growing techniques promoted in permaculture literature. There is an ornamental kitchen garden, a herb garden, a perennial vegetable and flower garden, Emilia Hazelip beds, and a 100m2 forest garden. The project was not funded, it began on true allotment practices - reusing old materials and cultivating our own plants, it proves that the basics can be achieved without huge financial investment.
The site aims to be a living text-book, but also a laboratory - produce is weighed even at this early stage, and notes are kept of the implementation of the plant systems. We hope to show realistic expectations for these various techniques in this locality. We also use the gardens to show how soil-care is vital, water use can be minimised, and local ecologies can be enhanced, and rising food bills offset by producing food and materials in these ways. It provides an easily accessible learning resource for locals, while also reflecting the fact that Wageningen is a Life Sciences university town - we help students of organic agriculture to learn what is involved in growing food not just theorising about it. The project provides information to academics, organisations, or individuals wanting to know about permaculture. Activities include tours, advice and demonstrations on workdays, courses, and supporting other greenspace initiatives in the area.

Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
