Stjelp in Parrega

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Demonstration, Educational, Permaculture Local Group Transition Town Permablitz

Project Summary

The Stjelp is a young Permaculture Farm located in Friesland, between the Wads and the Drent-Frisian Woods. On this farm a group of friends has set off to develop a permaculture inspired project, working toward self-sufficiency, demonstration, sharing, and celebration of life in all forms. This Project inspired the EcoTrolhas NL, offshoot of the Ecotrolhas in Portugal. This cooperation has as its aim the development and implementation of Permaculture Design, Edible Gardens and Appropriate Technology.

Project Description

The Project is based on a traditional Frysian Farm, known in Frysian as a Stjelp.

History: In 2012 a small group of friends with diverse Permacultural experiences all over the world decided to explore their Dutch & Frysian roots and started a Permaculture Project in a traditional Frysian farm in Parrega. The type of farm is known as a Stjelp.

Permaculture Elements: We currently maintain the following elements on our farm:

- Gardens with various raised beds and diverse polycultures.

- Greenhouse with a variety of heat-loving plants

- Chickencoop with 3 Beautiful Brahma Chickens

- Compost area with Vermicompost and cold/hot compost

- Recycling Area and small Workshop

For Transport we use Bicycles and (sailing)boats, aside a small car.

Aside from our regular farming activities we are organizing various 1 day Permaculture gardening Workshops in September and Oktober 2012. Workshop themes will be Permaculture Gardening, Urban Permaculture and more will follow. Other activities include Eco-scavenging and upcycling all sorts of resources. We are also preparing to build a large traditional Mongolian Ger in October for a Nomadic Ecovillage that is being developed by a friend.

We are welcoming visitors and volunteers for short or longer periods of time. Please message one of the Project admins or send us an email on info@permaculture.nl if you want to know more about the project or to plan a visit.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
