Mexico and Mesoamerica are lands where complex civilizations have emerged over time, so they have developed many sustainable traditional practices, which serve as examples and inspiration in Permaculture.
In Mexico there is still a vivid memory of a society based on agricultural self-sufficiency, as it was 30 years ago the reality for most Mexicans. Therefore Permaculture is made in Mexico within a social context, cultural and economic very different compared to the so-called first world countries where the concept originated.
Prehispanic elements as Chinampas-intensive system of food production in mini artificial islands, which support the population of Tenochtitlan (Aztecs ) or Mexican backyard of mixed forest production. Mexico provides the corn, tomatoes, chocolate, pumpkin, amaranth, among many other things to the basket of food that sustains humanity in the present.
