Loosing Michael

Project: Sailchearnach

This place, this little piece of the earth's crust has seen the flow of the ebb and tide of life for eons. People have lived, hunted, gathered and farmed here for thousands of years. Many people have occupied this little cottage that was built almost 200 years ago. We only arrived here a little over 20 years ago and put our own stamp on these 2.5 acres.

Every life has a beginning and an end, and sadly my partner's life - on this Earth, in this realm at least - ended on April 25th, 2015. We had shared 25 years together - half of my life, almost half of his.

I am still here and don't see that changing in the foreseeable future. It is my home after all. In many ways this little farm kept me alive through the inevitable shock at suddenly loosing Michael, through this period of profound and overwhelming psycho-social change and adjustment (and I'm far from having come out the other end, if that is even possible). It kept me alive because it continued to breath when I thought I couldn't, it blossomed and flowed and fruited and grew. The animals needed to be tended, fed, milked, and moved. New ones were born, others died and returned to the soil. The garden had been started and, unsure of my future economic circumstances, I reckoned it would be wise to keep it going even when I had the urge to give up or run away. It fed and nourished me in more than just the physical sense, as did the chickens and the goats and the fruit trees.

With full title to the property and no mortgage, I did not have to worry about the roof over my head or about food security. I do have to work harder in my day-job to pay the bills and that does have an impact on being able to manage the land. Much has been left undone. It has also become a lot harder to get away. New solutions need to be found, changes may need to be made when the time is right. Moreover, with no children, and family living far away I will need to consider succession.

Permaculture Principle #12: Creatively use and respond to change. I hope I will be able to conjur up the necessary creativity. It gives me hope and confidence to be connected to this incredible community of people with shared ethics and for that I am most grateful.

Is mise le meas, Ute.

Kim BEST
Kim BEST : I have just read your post 'loosing Michael'. So sad for your loss of your soul mate. My heart goes out to you. You will never forget him, but this incredible life keeps going on - one day after one other, and you will eventually once again find joy in this, I'm sure. Kind Regards.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
