We have an operational hatchery now and the farm and we are breeding "Hyline" egg bird pullets crossed with local "jungle" roosters. We have also found some local green and blue egg chooks and have added them to the mix. The goal s to help provide a sustainable protein source for rural people of the interior. We sold about 5 thousand chicks and 500 ducklings in 2014 at $15 dollars Fijian per dozen for the chicks, $4/ea for the ducklings. We just broke even, not counting my own labor and the cost of thee incubators. However we got a 10K grant from Ford motor company to help the local boarding school, and so far we have dug them a large Tilapia pond and next comes a strong chain-link fence and adding poultry- ducks to fertilize the pond and chickens for eggs for the dorm students who are chronically low on protein. In October we will obtain eight heritage breeds of chickens from New Zealand to improve the quality of local chicken stocks. We are feeding the chickens compost and wild plants and coconut, moringa leaves, etc as a supplemental feed, and they have a large 30x50M chicken yard for scratching around and enjoying life.
