3 Sisters experiment with bananas, passionfruit and sweet potato

We've now had a few weeks of well needed rain. Our initial swales have perfomed well with water moving as intended and the land slowly, but visibly, becoming hydrated.

In the spirit of permaculture we sought to stack a few functions for our next project - this one a 3 sisters variant.

We wanted to form a shade barrier against the shade house to help regulate the temperature inside and also to reduce the weedy growth that was overtaking the area.

Initially we thought to erect a trellis on which we would grow passionfruit. This would provide the shade and fruit but not necessarily much else.

Instead we planted a small stand of 10 banana suckers transplanted from other parts of the farm. Adjacent to the bananas we planted the passionfruit which will eventually climb its way up the bananas as well as 2 types of sweet potato, a clumping type and a running type. The sweet potato should eventually out compete the grass keeping the area maintenence light. They will also become seed stock for elsewhere on the farm.

As a short term crop we will also interplant paw paw which will add to the natural trellis. The system will be feed by the swale.
