A busy first season in the garden concluded with an abundant harvest of fresh food to our local foodbank. It felt great to drop off so much wonderful food to people we knew would need it, and was a satisfying conclusion to the season.
In addition, we planted two fruit trees, three seaberry bushes and two black current bushes to compliment the hascaps we planted in the spring, and applied an additional layer of woodchip mulch all over the paths.
A special event for children was another highlight of the summer, where we invited a local singer songwriter to perform some musical numbers related to plants for kids ages 2 to 8. Each child harvested some food and went home with a nice bag of goodies. We also talked to the parents a lot about growing their own gardens using the no-dig method.
The watering system worked well in the end, even tho it wasn't what we originally intended (ie, a rain water catchment system). Having the town workers to fill up our barrel whenever they came to water the municipal flower beds in the park allowed us to forge a link with them and get to know them a little.
We have plenty of plans and ambition for next year!
