Sharing Permaculture Everywhere
I worked on developing a Permaculture Section to a local community Garden in Hollywood Florida. (Highland garden community garden) We are developing soil, creating an outdoor zone one (under a tree) with limitations, (it is city owned property so we can't make it fully functional zone 1).
We are working with over a fourth of an acre of land. There are approximately 8 constant volunteers working an average of 8-10 hrs monthly.
We are detoxing soil by planting tubers and roots in all sections follwing the solar pattern and earth spring/fall movement. Some of these are malanga, yuca, yautia, yams, sweet potatoes. Our land was basically all sandy soil.
We engage our community by tapping into local small businesses where we obtain our soil, mulch and we use freecycle, craigslist, etc to get materials and tools we recycle and fix. We also get members from local garden clubs to donate some of their used supplies and goods and we use exclusively all organic seeds or cuttings. We use egg shells to limit our snail and slug populations, will start using seaweed to help fortify our soil. We have a yahoo list serve to communicate amoung ourselves for better communication and to retain files on permaculture tips such as companion planting, fixing tools, recycling, etc.
We just planted our first circles and have given them cutie names appropriate to our group efforts. Angie's mound contains, Thai spinach, moringa and papaya trees, butterfly pea vines, pineapples, sweet potatoes, cherry and vine tomatoes. Thai basil to name a few. Our Dessert mound has aloe Vera which is flowering, pitaya, ric roc cacti. More dessert plants to go in soon.
Our heart circle has four different types of tomatoes, Chinese and american broccoli, garlic chives, sweet and hot peppers along with a cranberry hibiscus tree, a papaya tree and a katuck. Soon to be planted are spinach, radish, onions, thyme and strawberries, rosemary and echinacea. Our border plants will be nasturtium, marigold, caraway and yarrow.
Our completed projects are one compost bin, Skipper Hugo our resident scarecrow (no tools were used to put him together) and lounging circles made from cut up logs to serve as our resting seats. Projects in process, water catchment systems, developing small ponds, solar dehydrator for starters!
