We have access to a 30 year old pine plantation where we are getting the wood for the hugel beds. The plantation has never been thinned out, so there are lots of standing dead we can use.
We used up the first pile we accumulated, so now we have to head back out with the chain saw and get back to logging.
It ended up working out so we had just the right amount of wood for half of the first "U" shape. We dug down about a foot to get the soil, piled the logs, and then buried them with the soil we dug up. Then we made a seed mixture, covered the bed with that, and then put down a thin layer of wood chip mulch to keep things moist. We'll see how things progress over the summer.
