Project: Quinta do Vale da Lama

Posted by André Carvalho over 10 years ago

June 2nd to 14th 400€ all included
  • Learn strategies and improve the way we collect, process and review information;
  • approach design using mapping, design from patterns to details, analysis of elements, use slope, orientation and analyses of needs and yields of systems;
  • increase productivity using intensive garden design strategies including: stacking, soil- building, mulch, nutrient cycling, pest control, green manures, worms, compost & companion planting.
  • survey landscapes for property design using simple and sophisticated tools, mapping and map making, site analysis and assessment;
  • read weather patterns, create and enhance micro-climates and use design strategies for all major global climatic zones;
  • trees and forests as regulators and moderators of ecosystems. How to sustainably use, propagate, harvest and manage tree systems using techniques such as coppicing, pollarding, grafting, designing shelter belts, orchards, guild planting and succession planning;
  • save money on energy bills with efficient home design, retrofit and renewable energy systems;
  • multiple uses for greywater, constructed wetland design and other smart water-use ideas;
  • passive water hydration and infiltration, rainwater collection, storage and composting toilets;
  • use reconstructive earth surgery, water harvesting and soil conditioning to recharge ground water, re-hydrate and drought-proof land;
  • bring fertility back to the land and build topsoil through forgotten techniques and a host of modern techniques for pasture renovation;
  • cycle nutrients and incorporate animals into your system using innovative and ancient techniques and ideas such as chicken tractors, pannage systems, pigeon lofts, dairy systems and bees;
  • create living ecosystems that feed and nurture us and future generations. Design using nature’s rules to create a lush and resilient natural environment;
  • think, design and place water systems such as aquaculture and aquaponics;
  • design passive solar buildings. The use of natural building materials, energy efficient house placement and design and the assurance of a healthy indoor environment;
  • develop strategies for creating community-wide sustainability, village development, alternative economies, local currencies, how to organize community groups, and how to start a business using for-profit, non-profit and trust legal structures;
  • cooperatively engage in exercises of group conceptual design.

And best yet: how to integrate and weave all of these concepts together.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

Member

Member

A member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation.

Male memberFemale member

Permaculture Matchmaker

One of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile.

verified

PDC Verified

People who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation.

pri_verified

pri_teacher

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.

pri_teacher
