Last autumn 2012 I got busy making models of a bamboo dome I wished to make. There is a plethora of information and ideas out there on many types of domes, joints and materials. Moso chiku grows abundantly here and I thought why not use it to advantage in gardening. We have abundant wildlife and I am reluctant to interfere with their patterns of movement without fully understanding them. But I do have to keep them out of the annuals. I built this single handedly. But I'm sure it would be a lot more fun to make with a group of like minded individuals. This is the first dome I have made. Having the model really helps in the construction the first couple of times. 4 people were able to lift it and carry it and place it over 3 raised garden beds. Then I wrapped a 2m wide 4mm nylon net around the circumference of the dome and used the last 3 metres to make a kind of hinged gateway that has worked quite well in the first year. I expect the dome to last about 7 or more years. I made a 15m bamboo slatted fence about 7 years ago and that's still looking great. It's even weathered a few minor typhoons. Here's the video:
If there is any interest from permaculturists I'll be happy to make a more detailed video on it's construction. Just ask.
