Tunnel House Refurbishment

Almost-before shot of tunnel house

Our spring project is getting the remaining tunnel house (there were once two) back into commission. We've analysed how damage occurred and planned remedial action.

- replacing 6 damaged posts.

- wiring around the top of all posts to prevent splitting.

- putting two longitudinal braces to hold all the hoops at constant spacing.

- new pro-grade plastic  from Redpaths. (which is actually much cheaper than the inferior greenhouse plastic sold by hardware stores).

- lowering all the raised beds to only 100mm

- putting in a thermal wall of concrete rubble along the south side.

- bringing the plastic much lower on the north side (pictured) to avoid shade.

Pictured is an "almost before" photo, late on our first day of work, with three posts replaced and a start made on the top rail for the north side iron wall. Behind the tunnel house is a chicken coop which is more or less ready to use - it just needs a little more rain-sheltered roosting space.

Richard Grevers : We've also cut down pine branches on the south side which could potentially damage the tunnel house in a big storm.

Richard Grevers : Update: Plastic is on, with a little more anchoring work needed at the east end. A new door has been constructed (wire mesh, to boost ventilation and insect access), and beds have been built on the south and east sides. Beds were sheet-mulched, with all soil screened to remove as much weed root as possible, and irrigation pipes laid below the beds. The north and central beds will be built this autumn. Summer crops include tomatoes (20 plants), courgette, cucumber, squash, parsley, basil, beetroot and rhubarb.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
