The School's inception came out of our collective need for a venue, where we could share our knowledge and implement it right away in a practical sensible way. We wanted to offer a place and a way for people to get together in a supportive environment, to learn from each other and from our greatest teacher- the Nature. That way we will build a resilient community and truly resilient individuals, individuals who are equipped with practical awareness and understanding from how to approach assessment of a land site to how to turn a compost pile and save seeds. Together we will tackle projects like building an outdoor kitchen, creating swales on contour (a system of high berms), a chicken tractor, a greenhouse.
A typical day will start with an observation and awareness of the site: from wind direction, sun, weather, animals, etc. Then we will come in for a brief, some theory and perhaps a movie showing or listen to a guest speaker to get inspired. We will also do a couple of "mock" scenarios like "what if all the sudden we had no electricity/water/the system collapsed/etc. - what would we do? and how would we do it". The rest of the time will be spent outdoors working on a project. Homework will be assigned at the end of the day.

Saturdays from 10am-1pm in Perth, ON at Agape Gardens Education Site and Homestead. Early bird special: $50/session. (Regular rate: $90). One free space for a single parent (low income). Childcare possible. Certificate upon completion. Heavy Earthworks are done in Stream I (October-December) - a particularly great practical opportunity for PDC holders to enhance skills and understanding of design implementation on site.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
