About to start the Appalachan trail tomorrow with my handy wild edibles of the North Eastern USA guide.I've been learning a lot about the amazing variety of wild edible plants and their suprising density in regards to food value. To name acouple off hand: stinnging nettles and chick weed. This realization that I've been having the last couple of years with my new permaculture eyes, so to speak, has shown me that every plant seems to have some use in the greater ecosystem. Not just for our benifit but but for the greatrer whole, although learning these uses are dreadfully important to us humans in increasing urgency. Area specific study is needed for real application in a system. For my area I'm currently consulting Florida Ethnobotany by:Daniel F. Austin. But becides the text books just going out for a walkabout and checking out the flora for myself has been very revealing. Just within my area I've found several allready local strains of acacia as well as some nitrogen fixing species and dynamic accumulators. The more I look just around my area the more I see potential and I see more plants with more uses than I know what to do with.
