Greetings,
I havent posted any updates for some time so I thought I should include what the latest but modest steps we have progressed on.
As noted in the summery, I built a compost (had to make sure it was fully enclosed due to lack of fence, numerous stray dogs, donkeys, horses and cows. It is progressing slowly but surely.
Also, on this island the island consume an incredibly unhealthy amount of soft drink, and following this there are plastic bottles all over the place (note: there is no waste management system exisiting on the island). We have taken to collecting these bottles and using them to squeeze in rubbish such as plastic, and also sand to be used as fill-in when constructing floors, or also such as blocks to build with. So I constructed a little place for the empty bottle to exist until they can be put to use. In addition, I do tutoring to the local school kids here, and aside from monetary payment, kids can also pay with fill up bottles, or fish as the local industry here is fishing.
Alongside the bottle holding space is a small lot for paper and cardboard to reuse, principlally to lay down first before putting on it soil/compost as the ground is primarily sand.
And currently under consrtuction is the nursery. The harsh condition here mean that the very strong winds and salt hinder most plants from taking off.. so this is very important space.
Our main limitations to date have been our lack of fencing, and water. The island until only very recently accessed water via some wells located at some distance from the town. If one didnt lay down private hoses/tubes or have a cart and donkeys to access this, it was very costly. We now boast a cart and 2 donkeys, but accessing the water is a slow and tiresome process, so the water is prioritised currently for human and pet/donkey use. The water we reuse goes toward the plants. The town now has a desalination plant, but water only now and then is processed, and tubing to each property has not yet beeb put down. Hopefully when better organised, and when ***eventually*** the tubes/hoses are in, we can advance at a much faster pace.
On a side note, a foundation visited the local primary school with the intention of getting them to start and organic garden. I have volunteered to help get it going. I'll keep those interested posted on how it develops!
(will post pictures eventually)
