Back to Maya Mountain Research Farm
Project: Maya Mountain Research Farm
Posted by Christopher Nesbitt over 11 years ago
Maya Mountain Research Farm is a diversified farm with an emphasis on agroforestry, renewable energy and replicating ecological services through complex stacked polycultures. It is also a registered NGO. We have 24 beds in buildings lit by photovoltaic systems and are located two miles up river from the predominantly Kekchi maya community of San Pedro Columbia, Toledo, BELIZE.
Interns get a chance to work in Central Americas oldest permaculture project. We have well over 500 species of plants we work with, rare cultivars of cacao, thousands of pineapples to eat (starting in May), we raise pigs, chickens, ducks and turkeys, and all of our power comes from photovoltaic systems.
This summer we will be working on the following projects:
MMRF has some very rare criollo cacaos that we want to expand into the agroforestry system this year. Work will focus on planting cacao with biochar and compost under the shade of trees.
We also have an aquaponics system that was started by Michael Buick and for which we have accumulated photovoltaic equipment to run the pumps. Interns will get a chance to learn about aquaponics and photovoltaics by having hands on experience.
One of the design projects of this years Permaculture Design Course was a welcome center, close to the river. We would like to implement their design.
And, if we have enough sign ups, we would like to build a small biogas plant to make methane from the pig waste at the piggery. This was designed by permaculturist Kevin Mascarenhas.
This internship is open to anyone! Interested parties please write to info@mmrfbz.org.

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.
MemberA member is a permaculturist who has never taken a PDC course. These cannot become PDC teachers. Members may be novice or highly experienced permaculturists or anywhere in between. Watch their updates for evaluation. |

Permaculture MatchmakerOne of these badges will show if you select your gender and the "I'm single, looking for a permaculture partner" option in your profile. |
|
PDCPeople who claim to have taken a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) course somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC VerifiedPeople who have entered an email address for the teacher of their PDC course, and have had their PDC status verified by that teacher. Watch their updates for evaluation. |
|
PRI PDCPeople who’ve taken a Permaculture Research Institute PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PDC TeacherPeople who claim to teach some version of PDC somewhere in the world. |
|
PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
