Revision, indecision or analysis paralysis?

Project: Permaculture Paddock Paradise

Posted by Petra Doerfling about 12 years ago

Every time I look at my place I change my mind on how to do things, where to plant things, or even what to plant. Is it revision, indecision or simply analysis paralysis?

Yesterday I gave in to the impulse buy and got myself two citrus trees, my favourite oranges, blood and valencia... yum :).

Now the problem started when I got home and decided I was going to plant them in the front yard where there is lots of sun. My hubby started protesting... isn't this where you wanted to have another paddock, and I am not having two orange trees just stuck into the ground without any plan, etc, etc... Strangely I thought I had a plan, and oops yes the front yard was supposed to be a paddock for the horses. We found a new spot and it's actually a better spot. Still out the front but closer to the house, north facing, out of the worst of the wind and protected from the south by the house.

So I sat down and revised my plan for the property... oops I had not even entered any vegetable gardens or food forest, or anything else I thought of onto the plan... just a plan for the horse paddocks... doh... so I didn't have a plan really for the orange trees. So last night I made a new plan and here it is:

I was quite happy with it, until this morning and I discovered that the area designated for the fruit forest is in dapple shade unitl about lunchtime, not sure though if it will be in dapple shade in summer.

I also discovered that I made an error in my legend were the D should really be the E. Minor really, but I found myself analysing the plan over and over again and my poor citrus trees are sitting out there wondering where their home will be.

The other thing that I discovered is that those citrus trees where amongst a bunch of dwarf varieties so I assumed they were dwarf as well... they are not but will grow to the stately height of 8m. So I need to revise my plan for where to plant the fruit trees and which tree to plant where as I also want to plant a mango, a few coffee trees, some stone fruits... so much to consider when planing something like that... better revise again, or should i just do?

If it is this tricky with the fruit trees, how will it be with the fodder trees? And then there is the point of what grows with what... argh.

Analysis paralysis....

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
