After I retired in 2002 I was given a large batch of hybrid chestnuts experimentally bred in Antrim County, Michigan for blight resistance. No one there had the time or inclination to plant them or even maintain the records necessary to continue the breeding experiments. I now have a small number of the survivors of these experiments growing and producing nuts in Washtenaw County, Michigan, within the region where the North American Chestnut blight was present during the crash of the North American Chestnut population. I was hospitalized for repair of an upper arotic aneurysm about two years ago and failed to maintain the only "orchard style" planting from those original seeds. Over half of the initially established trees did not survive lack of maintenance and support and climatic and soil incompatability issues.
