If you've never heard about a worm tower, look at this video - it explains it quite well:

In words: Take some kind of pipe, the one half of the pipe that'll get below the ground gets drilled many holes, big enough so that the worms can enter the pipe from the sides; find a way to close the pipe above ground so that you keep it moist and then put in compost worms and compostable material, e.g. your kitchen slops.
Its important that you take those worms that live in the compost, because others will probably not feed from what you put into the pipe. But if they feed they're going to disperse their wonderful worm cast all around the area of the pipe. So this sounds like a nice way to get organic matter into the soil without digging or tilling it.
And so I built a small version into my plant pot.. fairly simple.
What you see is the inside of this small worm tower, with the apple core left. And nice little mildew.
The images below show the whole pot and a macro shot of the (remaining) white clover sowed into the pot. Most of them died, because of the bad conditions (heating, low light (winter and east facing window) and rough watering)... And i tried to catch the worm cast (last image).
