Project: Uniao Progressiva Chao Sobral

Facing northwest on a gentle slope, in the centre of Chão Sobral, near a secondary valley where chestnuts used to grow, under cherry trees you find the "house of the people", that's the project "zone 0". About 49m2, 3 walls buried in the slope and the front wall as a garage door and a big window to the sunset on "Caramulo" mountain horizon.
It used to be a garage when the association bought this nice piece of land of our dreams.
Today it is the most multifunctional element of our system, all this things can happen at the same time:
- most important, it is where almost everyone in the village gathers to socialize
- it is a place to enjoy village made drinks, sweets, goat cheese and sausages
- local handicraft is for sale, souvenirs, knifes, carpets, tapestry
- it serves as our only coffee shop
- it's the village common television room
- dominoes, chess, cards games, tablefootball and other entertainment moves around
- a few shelfs with local books stands at the entrance, and the regional newspaper moves from hand to hand
- pictures and postcards of the village hang on the wall
- the only public toilet, available in the village, is most useful here during feast days
At the moment, our "zone 0" is at the same time the main source of income for the project and where we fulfill the main purpose of it all: to bring together young and old for a chat, coffee or beer and enjoy themselves.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
